Marketing Moneyball

Anyone remember the 2011 masterpiece based on Michael Lewis’s book of the same name?
The story follows two baseball iconoclasts, Billy Beane and Peter Brand (played by Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill), as they try to keep the woefully underfunded Oakland A’s competitive in Major League Baseball. Beane and Brand end up striking gold when they discover a way to leverage a statistical approach to team-building championed by baseball statistician Bill James.

When it comes to marketing your business, you’re in the exact same position as the Oakland A’s front office—unless you’re the New York Yankees of your category.

You need a strategy that allows you to extract unseen value from every tool, channel, and platform you use to market. You can’t pay for every impression like the category leader does because you don’t have as much money as the category leader.

Just like Beane and Brand, you need a new approach.
