Clarity + consistency beats creativity.
From a guy who prizes creativity above basically everything, this is a tough pill to swallow. But I’ve found it to be true more often than not: when it comes to marketing, clarity and consistency beat creativity almost every time.
|
(I say “almost” because once in a while you get the Liquid Deaths and Dollar Shave Clubs of the world that seem to upend that notion. But for most brands, virality isn’t a plan. It’s a pipe dream.)

While those brands are busy dreaming of a viral breakthrough, their competitors are hammering the same two or three points home with commitment and discipline. And they’re winning because of it.

That’s not an L for creativity, because it obviously has its place. It just means that, for most brands, clarity and consistency represent the simplest game plan for earning a marketing W.
