Can branding create a moat when competitors can copy our features?
Branding can’t create a technical moat, but done right, it can create something even more powerful: a psychological moat.
Competitors may be able to copy an interface or feature set, but it’s much harder to copy a position customers associate with you, a recognizable visual language, a distinctive voice, accumulated trust, and a customer experience built around a genuine point of view.
In an Oxford Saïd Business School analysis of 872 brands, “Difference” was the number-one brand factor associated with share-price outperformance and accounted for 35% of the measured brand impact. That does not turn a brand into patent protection, but it quantifies the economic value of being perceived as genuinely different. (Kantar and Oxford’s brand-difference research)
